Land Clearing Services Available in Baker County
Seven work services, one written sheet, Macclenny to Olustee. The land clearing service removes pine, palmetto, titi and stumps; the longleaf you want stays:
- Land clearing to dirt, stumps out: $2,800 to 5,000 an acre.
- Forestry mulching services on pine lots and timber tracts: $2,700 a day.
- Stump grinding at $4.25 an inch, $160 minimum.
- Lot clearing on small residential lots in town: a quarter acre is $1,900 flat.
- Brush clearing and underbrushing along a woods road.
- Tree clearing and tree removal, with the city tree code checked inside town.
- Site prep and dirt work, pad included, quoted per pad.
Concrete, wells, septic and house demolition are not ours. I know people who do them.
Lot Clearing and Acreage Clearing for New Homes in Macclenny and Sanderson
Baker County's builders pulled 99 single-family permits in 2025, 94 of them unincorporated (Census Building Permits Survey), flat on the year. The lots are the 1 to 5 acre parcels around the two towns, the pine tracts at Sanderson and Taylor, and the I-10 exit 336 and 343 corridor. Residential land clearing on a 3-acre pine lot runs two days with the skid steer, about $5,400; my nearest comparable is a lot off CR 218 in Clay, same palmetto and slash pine. Property development on commercial land at the exits gets the same sheet as residential jobs; commercial land clearing and site clearing run by the acre. Pads are rough grade and 12 inches of compacted fill above crown of road, quoted per pad. Site preparation here starts with the ditch; a flatwoods lot with no outfall is a pond in July.
Forestry Mulching and Brush Clearing on Pine Tracts
Forestry mulching is the right tool on a Baker pine lot, and this is the one county where a burn pile is sometimes still an option: a Florida Forest Service burn authorization can be practical outside town. Most owners still mulch. The head grinds trees and brush to 8 inches into a 2 to 4 inch mulch layer in one pass. Palmetto root mats shred under the drum where a rotary cutter trims the fronds and leaves the mat. Palmetto grows on these flatwoods like it pays the taxes. Under longleaf or a hammock oak the work is selective clearing: the tree stays, the gallberry and undergrowth go. Removing vegetation this way keeps the topsoil. Clearing brush on 12 acres of old pasture took the 300-hp mulcher three days on a comparable job in Nassau.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost in Baker County?
Slash pine and palmetto flatwoods mulch at $1,400 to 2,300 an acre by density. Longleaf sandhill on Trail Ridge and the Osceola edge runs $1,100 to 1,700. Hardwood hammock near Ocean Pond or along the St. Marys River, oaks kept, runs $2,000 to 3,200. Full clearing to dirt with stumps is $2,800 to 5,000. That comparable pasture reclaim came to $12,300 plus transport for the big mulcher. The wet-season day on flatwoods, June to September, and the tortoise survey, $400 to 900, on a sandhill lot go in the written price first. No surprises on the invoice.
- Skid steer mulcher $2,700 a day, transport included across Baker County; 300-hp mulcher $4,100 plus transport.
- Root rake or dozer grubbing by the hour, $165 with operator; haul-off $650 to 1,200 a load.

The Ground Property Owners Clear From the St. Marys River to the Osceola
Baker ground is pine plantation and natural flatwoods across most of the county: slash pine over palmetto and gallberry on flatwoods sand with a hardpan 12 to 30 inches down, standing water June to September. The soil survey calls it a spodosol. Longleaf and wiregrass sandhill runs along Trail Ridge and into the Osceola National Forest, deep sugar sand with tortoise burrows. Cypress and bayhead swamps, titi and pitcher plant bogs line the Okefenokee edge; hardwood hammock follows the St. Marys. Wet ground stays out of the footprint. Pine and hardwood both mulch; cypress knees do not. A mulcher floats on wet flatwoods where a dozer sinks to the hardpan. Walk the property with me and I will read the site conditions.
Tree Permits, Wetlands and Protected Species Before You Clear in Baker
The Baker County Land Development Regulations tie clearing to a building permit or bona fide agriculture, and there is no stand-alone tree ordinance outside Macclenny; inside city limits the Macclenny tree code applies. Timber tracts under greenbelt classification follow silviculture BMPs. The SJRWMD Environmental Resource Permit is triggered by fill and drainage changes, not clearing, and west of Olustee the SRWMD takes over: a pond or a filled bay needs the ERP before excavation. FWC gopher tortoise rules apply on Trail Ridge and the sandhill ridges: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow. Red-cockaded woodpecker cavity trees in the Osceola longleaf stay; bald eagle nests on Ocean Pond carry a 660-foot buffer. On our jobs out here the wet edge gets flagged on the walk-through.
Storm Debris Cleanup by the Load
Irma in 2017 laid pines down along US 90 and SR 121 for miles. Debby, in 2012 and again in 2024, put the St. Marys River over its banks at Macclenny. Storm cleanup on a private lot is the owner's bill; FEMA takes public roadside debris, not what is inside your fence line. Haul-off runs $650 to 1,200 per 10-yard load, and 2 acres of heavy storm wood is about 11 loads. Slash pine snaps at the top and leans; longleaf mostly stands; laurel oak fails at the heart. Out here the wood is often worth bucking for firewood. Trees and branches down? Text me a picture for a load count.
Areas We Serve in Baker County
Serving Baker County from the Middleburg yard: Macclenny, Glen St. Mary, Sanderson, Olustee, Taylor, Cuyler, Baxter and Margaretta, FL and the surrounding areas. Transport is included throughout Baker County and across Duval, Clay, St. Johns and Nassau, five counties in Florida on one Northeast Florida sheet. No Navy base out here; NAS Jacksonville is 35 minutes down I-10, where I learned to grade a pad. Agricultural land and timber tracts get the same crew as the master-planned communities back east, same service area price.
Land Clearing Questions from Baker Property Owners
How much does land clearing cost per acre out here?
Slash pine and palmetto mulching is $1,400 to 2,300 an acre; full clearing to dirt with stumps is $2,800 to 5,000. A 3-acre pine lot is about two days, $5,400, on a comparable job in Clay. Longleaf sandhill is $1,100 to 1,700 because the sugar sand carries lighter brush.
What do professional land clearing services in Baker include?
Mulching or grubbing the vegetation, pulling stumps where the plan calls for dirt, and rough grading the pad. Land clearing services in Baker also cover the burn authorization when a pile makes sense, the tortoise survey, and the haul-off. Pond excavation, drainage swales and final grading are separate lines the homeowner sees first.
Do I need a permit to burn cleared brush in Macclenny?
Yes, a Florida Forest Service burn authorization, and inside Macclenny city limits you will not get one in practice. On a tract outside town it is sometimes workable, and Baker is the one county where I say so. Mulching skips the question: the material stays as ground cover and the lot is clear the same day.
Can you handle heavily wooded timber and larger land clearing projects?
Yes, we have the equipment to handle it. The skid steer takes 8-inch stems; the 300-hp mulcher takes a woodland tract of pine and hardwood to 12 inches and did 12 acres of pasture in three days. Two days transform a pine lot into a staked pad. Equipment and expertise came out of my Seabee years.
How do I get an estimate for clearing land in Baker County?
Pick a walk-through slot on the online calendar or call (904) 406-7990. I confirm by text the same evening and hand you a written price after the walk. Residential and commercial, the land clearing service estimate is free. Reclaim overgrown land, clear a site for commercial development, or remove unwanted vegetation along a line: our experience and equipment finish it safely and efficiently, and gallberry will not overgrow the lot for years. The ditch leaves graded, without erosion.
