What We Mulch and Clear on the CR 218 Lots
Palmetto and slash pine on the 1 to 5 acre Middleburg and Lake Asbury lots, with gallberry, wax myrtle and grape vine in the understory. Standing trees to 8 inches go down in one pass; heritage live oaks stay under the county code. Small trees and sapling pine are the easy part. At Keystone Heights and around Camp Blanding the ground turns to sandhill and sand pine scrub on Trail Ridge, which mulches fast and dry. Palmetto root systems are the slow part anywhere: the drum shreds the mat a rotary cutter only combs. Middleburg sand is in my truck, my boots and probably my will.
Acreage and Pasture Mulching Around Middleburg, FL
Overgrown acreage along the First Coast Expressway corridor and out CR 218 toward Jennings State Forest runs 1 to 10 acres of pine nobody has thinned. We clear land like that at an acre a day in thick palmetto, two acres in light brush. A 6-acre scrub tract at Keystone Heights took two days, $7,200. Fire breaks and fence lines come first. On our jobs in Clay the wet corners along Black Creek get flagged before the machine unloads; a mulcher floats where a dozer sinks to the hardpan.
Residential Mulching Services: Lots and Backyards, Not a Tree Service
A half-acre lot is one day, $2,700; a quarter-acre lot in Orange Park or Green Cove Springs is $1,900 flat. Backyards on Fleming Island and in Oakleaf went to privet, vine and sapling laurel oak against the fence. The heavy-duty head fits a 10-foot gate, and we cut trees it cannot swallow. Around the landscape beds the trees and brush end up as a 2 to 4 inch layer of mulched material. Tree removal over a roof is a tree service job, not ours. I know people who do.
Forestry Mulching Cost in Clay County: Mulch by the Day or the Acre
Palmetto and pine flatwoods mulch at $1,400 to 2,300 an acre by density. Trail Ridge sandhill at Keystone Heights runs $1,100 to 1,700. Live oak hammock on Black Creek, Doctors Lake or the St. Johns River, oaks kept, is selective clearing at $2,000 to 3,200. The wet-season day on flatwoods, June to September, goes in the written price before anything else. No surprises on the invoice.
- Skid steer mulcher: $2,700 a day, no transport line anywhere in Clay.
- 300-hp mulcher: $4,100 a day plus transport; it takes stems to 12 inches.
- Haul-off, if the material has to leave: $650 to 1,200 per 10-yard load.
Free estimates on-site, written quote the same day. Pick a slot on the calendar or call (904) 406-7990. I text that evening.
After Mulching: Drive It, Grind It Twice, or Grade a Pad
You are left with 2 to 4 inches of chipped pine and palmetto as ground cover. Drive on it the same day without a rut. Topsoil stays put instead of blowing off the flatwoods sand. Palmetto resprouts from any crown the drum missed; I grind the thick patches again the next dry season. Cleared areas meant for a house pad still need the root rake at $165 an hour, then 12 inches of compacted fill above crown of road and three roller passes. Cleared ground meant for grass gets the material raked into strips.
Permits, Tortoises and Wetlands Before Mulching or Land Clearing in Clay County
Mulching vegetation on a lot under 1 acre needs no county permit. Over 1 acre, or ahead of a building permit, the Clay County Land Development Code wants a land clearing permit, and trees 8 inches DBH plus heritage live oaks are protected. Green Cove Springs and Orange Park run their own tree codes. The SJRWMD Environmental Resource Permit is triggered by fill and drainage changes, not mulching. FWC gopher tortoise rules cover all of Trail Ridge: survey within 90 days, no work within 25 feet of a burrow. Eagle nests on Black Creek and Doctors Lake carry a 660-foot buffer. Flags go in at the walk-through.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mulching Services
How much does mulching cost per acre in Clay?
Between $1,400 and 2,300 an acre on palmetto and pine flatwoods, $1,100 to 1,700 on Trail Ridge sandhill. By the day, $2,700 for the skid steer and $4,100 plus transport for the 300-hp machine. Six acres of Keystone Heights scrub was $7,200 in two days.
How is forestry mulching different from traditional clearing?
Traditional clearing pushes everything into a dozer pile and then burns or hauls it. Mulching grinds trees and brush where they stand and leaves the material as cover: no burn pile, no bare sand, no load count. Land clearing in Clay County with a dozer still fits when a pad is coming.
Will mulching kill the palmetto and underbrush for good?
No. Palmetto resprouts from the crown, and a 3-inch mulch layer only slows it. A second pass the next dry season takes most of it, and undergrowth like gallberry comes back thin. To eliminate the mat for good, the root rake has to pull it.
Can I drive across the mulched area?
Yes, the same day. Two to 4 inches of mulched material carries a pickup without a rut, and a concrete truck once the ground has had a dry week. For a driveway or pad the layer is raked off first. Mulching leaves a lot walkable and clear, not buildable.
Does the service cover commercial sites and the rest of North Florida too?
Yes. Commercial sites on Blanding Boulevard and US 17 get the same crew as a backyard in Oakleaf. We work the whole metro, Clay County FL to Nassau and St. Johns, and refer out demolition and stump grinding. Cleanup is on the ticket, and the 2026 dry season is already filling on the calendar.
