A lawn calls for the grind; a pad calls for the root rake. A tree stump ground 6 to 8 inches below grade is finished for grass, sod or a landscape bed; the root system stays in the sand and decays over three to five years. Anything under a future house pad or driveway comes out whole, because fill does not compact over a rotting root ball. That is the root rake at $165 an hour, rough grading, then 12 inches of compacted fill above crown of road. Live oak and pine grind clean. Cabbage palm boots do not grind like oak; they shred and wrap the wheel, so palms are quoted each. A protected live oak over 8 inches needs the county permit before it is cut, and I will not grind a trunk that still has a permit question on it. Oak stumps have more patience than I do.
